Adult Literacy Kapiti: Open Wananga Courses
In collaboration with the Open Wananga we are able to offer a range of learning programmes at no direct cost to the learner.
To enrol you need to be 18 years or older and have not completed a formal qualification before.
The programme is open to all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.
Learning to Learn (Papa Ako)
Papa Ako is a fee free, part time, home based and kaitiaki (tutor) supported ‘learning to learn’ programme, for students who are considering tertiary training for the first time or those who haven’t studied in a while. Papa Ako is a 9 month programme and is often completed in conjunction with either Papa Whairawa or Mahi Toa.
Financial Literacy(Papa Whairawa)
Papa Whairawa is a fee free part time home based and kaitiaki (tutor) supported financial literacy programme. It has been designed to give you the knowledge and skills to help make smart decisions about your money. You have up to 12 months to complete this programme but it is possible to do it in less time.
National Certificate in Employment (Mahi Toa)
Mahi Toa is a fee free home based part time programme that is designed to prepare you for employment, a promotion or a career change. It will give you the motivation, knowledge, skills and the right attitude to get a job and build your future. These programmes will help you to:
- Gain a foundation level qualification
- Communicate with your family, friends and workmates.
- Understand and respond to letters, notices and forms.
- Make sense of numbers in your life.
- Look for further education and training.
- Apply for work or change they type of work you are doing.
How does it work? Open Wananga courses are all part-time study. They are home-based so you can do it from the comfort of your own home, or with friends as a group. To help you and keep you motivated, you will have a Tutor who will keep in regular contact and meet with you during the programme. We will also hold weekly learning sessions with our tutor that will support you learning and completing the workbooks.
Shortly after enrolling, you receive a package of learning materials (at no cost to you).There are three packages in total. Each one is full of resources such as workbooks, DVDs, books and journals to help you with your learning. Your Tutor will contact you soon after your first package arrives to answer any questions you might have.
