Become an adult literacy tutor
To help our students reach their potential, we need motivated and skilled tutors.
If you have reading, writing or basic maths skills and are keen to help those with literacy difficulties, we would love to hear from you. Our tutors are a mix of volunteers and independent contractors. They bring a wide range of life skills to their work.
Training
- All our tutors must undertake the Certificate of Adult Literacy Tutoring (CALT), level 5.
- We can offer you free training in the form of a full internal scholarship in return for a commitment from you of volunteer tuition. This includes 20 hours working one-on-one with a student.
- Training is provided by national trainers from Literacy Aotearoa Inc.
- Training involves 80 hours of course time and 20 hours supervised practice over one year.
- We run a Tutor Training Course in Paraparaumu once a year, usually over February and March.
- We will hold an information evening for prospective tutors later this year.
Tutoring
Generally, when you begin tutoring the minimum time commitment is around one or two hours a week.
